TO MY FABULOUS ARTISTS!
During these seemingly hard times it becomes easier to buy into the notion that nothing is going to happen with your career. Certainly I read e-mails passed onto me by reputable folks confirming that fact. Always remember, you do have a choice. Actors, you can choose to get depressed and buy into it or you can work harder and bypass the obstacles.
With my line of work I fortunately hear the good news that comes from working smart. I do know that this month Melissa Paige booked a Feature Film and is now SAG, I noticed on Netflix former students Lira Kellerman and Bo Barrett have films that they're starring in and many are Booking Commercials. Other students this month are building their resumes Co-Starring on Television Shows, Starring in Internet Series, Shorts and Independent Feature Films.
So, you can sit around wondering what happened or you can make things happen. There is opportunity everywhere. The Internet is booming with product whereby Network Executives are looking to find the next Television Show. Why not! They didn't have to pay for the pilot and it was easy for someone else to shoot 13 short segments for them to get a taste of what the show is going to look like and whether or not there's a following. You can also get online and send yourself out for some juicy roles that other people won't do because it doesn't pay. Yes. It can be a long road for most and a short road for some. And I know that there are days when it feels like your success as an artist is in the distance especially during these times. And yes, the paying jobs are getting fewer and far between. But there are some that do pay a little to keep you busy and excited about being an actor. Someone is getting that job. Why not you, right? I just don't want you to be so down about the state of things that you don't try at all. You need to get out there and practice. Don't be that person giving me that panic call because you're rusty. Be prepared when you do get that opportunity! I'd rather tune you up then work on calming you down.
Look, someone has to be the voice of optimism. That voice is going to have to be me. Get out there and try! If you don't, you're going to regret it for the rest of your life. If you've tried and you just rather do something else, that is awesome. But if your passion lies in this business as an actor, don't quit. You'll never make it if you quit. Get that package together so that your reps have more to work with and when that door opens, be ready to take that job by giving it all that you've got and book.
Cheers!
